#145. Weird Christian Dating Sites

Apr 12th by Jon

I got married before dating websites were popular which is probably a good thing. I have to imagine that in some ways I would have written the world’s longest, most sarcastic profile in the history of dating. Just imagine this blog, only condensed under a picture of me by a sailboat. (So I would look rich on my dating profile.)

Lots of my friends have used dating sites and a few have met their spouses with them. But like a lot of things in society, alongside match and eharmony, Christian versions have emerged. You probably have a favorite, but based on the 978 radio commercials I’ve heard in the last week, I’m going with the site, “Equally Yoked.”

I think this is probably a good site. They sincerely seem dedicated to helping Christians meet other Christians and it looks like a safer dating alternative. In fact, this is one of the benefits they talk about, “You are meeting proactive people with criminal background checks, sexual offender background checks, who want to be contacted!” Can you imagine if your friend set you up for a date by saying, “He’s a proactive person with a sexual offender background check. And he’s good with animals.”

I don’t have any issue with the site except the name. Being yoked just doesn’t sound like an awesome experience. I know it’s a biblical term and important. I believe that my wife are yoked and that yoking is all around cool. But have you ever in your life said to a friend, “I think it’s time I settle down and get my yoke on.”

Probably not, but when my friends that aren’t Christian say, “you guys are so weird,” I completely understand what they are talking about.

Dalton took a room at the only place in town, Mrs. Cartright’s. She didn’t like to rent rooms to his sort, a single man, but the good Lord didn’t say to only love the people you liked. She preferred families or young woman who were coming to visit relatives. But single men? Oh the scandal, he even looked like he might chew gum or horror magnified, smoke cigarettes.

Click here if Julieanne’s father meets Dalton in the feed store and hires him on as a farm hand.

Click here if Julieanne’s horses get spooked and Dalton saves her life in the town square.

“I think it’s time I settle down and get my yoke on.”

Genius quote.

Are you Christian? Are you single? Are you Christian and single?

At least it’s not positivesingles.com

Darcy Apr 12, 2008

Jon, I followed a link to your site from ThePoint, and I’m hooked! As a single-again (widowed), I had to check out some of those sites, and I only have one thing to say about ‘em: be afraid. Be very afraid. :o D

And it’s supposed to COMFORT me that they’ve had criminal background checks? HA!

Been sending links to all my friends, and I’ll be back. Thanks for the grins!

I was pretty much going to say the same thing after last week I incorporated Google AdSense onto the Allen Hunt Show website and sure enough this ad popped up

What I want to know is how do they “certify Christian”

Stephen Apr 12, 2008

‘get my yoke on’. LOL

princessofsomething Apr 12, 2008

“I think it’s time I settle down and get my yoke on” is my new favorite quote ever.

Thanks for the giggle.

Kristi Apr 13, 2008

okay…seriously…i love you. this is my new favorite blog.

Getting your yoke on is cool and everything but these sites make me wonder, what ever happened to just talking to someone? Maybe this is a way to ensure that you never go out with someone who isn’t a Christian, cause we all know that that would just be wrong.

“Getting my yoke on” is now offically in my lexicon.

Finally.

Chris Apr 17, 2008

Yes we are weird.

Not just the names, but the m.o. of Christian “daters” on these websites (including eharmony)… but of course that’s another blog.

I am guilty of writing some incredibly sarcastic dating profiles. I still got one up at eHarmony, and probably a few other long forgotten sites, but I spent more time reading (i.e. laughing at) girls’ profiles than actually looking for a match. Virtually every girl is shy until you get to know her and her friends have the “craziest stories” that you just gotta hear. Oh, yippee.

Obviously, it’s not something I ever took seriously. Even back when I was desp– I mean, um, feeling lone– err, just looking to make ou– uhh, connect with someone. That’s what I meant.

Great blog, by the way.

I realized last night that it’s time to settle down and get my yoke on when my back was itching, and I couldn’t go over to mom’s to have her scratch it cause she was already in bed!

I think the "yoked" reference, even if it sounds weird, relates to passages in 2 Corinthians & Mark about marriage and relationships as being links, or yokes. If you are looking for another alternative there is http://www.getYoked.net

"What happened to Bob?"
"He went and got yoked!"

Shalondra Apr 28, 2010

I am actually a member of Equally Yoked, but your blog made me grin and chuckle to myself regardless. Hahaha. It's good to be able to laugh at yourself. Thanks for helping us believers do that, Jon. We need more in the body like you. :)

I would call the Christian dating site I create "LeaveRoom4theHolySpirit.org"

I would like to introduce you to CometChat – a Facebook style floating

2-player games. It also integrates seamlessly with your website.

I can assure you that your users will spend more time on your website once
you get CometChat. Do have a look at our website for more information:
