#123. Flags, handbells and puppets.

Apr 7th by Jon

My friend told me that people in church uses flags sometimes in their service because it makes it easier for the Holy Spirit to find you. He believes it’s the church’s version of one of those little guys on aircraft carriers that help land the fighter jets by waving the orange lights in their hands. When the Holy Spirit is trying to land in your church it is able to see the flags and have an easier landing. As far as handbells go, I think that must be an old testament thing. I don’t remember handbells but I’m sure there were some in Joel. But as far as puppets go I don’t think there’s a Biblical reference for them. Although, that would be awesome. I wish there was a disciple named Robert who was really good with puppetry. And whenever Jesus would tell a parable to a crowd, he would act it out next to him with the puppets. This would anger the other disciples but Jesus would keep saying, “I got a fever and the only cure is more puppet. Really explore the whole parable with the puppets.” That just morphed into a complete rip off of the SNL cowbell skit, but that’s why I wrote post #1.

How could you leave out the dancers!?! Certainly, those praise team twinkle toes deserve a shout/clap of praise……

It’s a little old-school, but on’t forget felt boards

I have a suggestion: white youth ministers in predominantly white churches using mostly outdated hip-hop slang to seem relevant. Examples include “off the hook,” “crunk,” “down with …,” and the deal-breaker “jiggity.” The occasional music minister has been known to be guilty of this as well.

To show my utter ignorance, does “off the hook” mean anything other than “not being held responsible” or a telephone that hasn’t been hung up?

The image of using the flags to show the Holy Spirit where to land…priceless! Whenever we’d visit a church with flags, I’d always steer clear of the flag-wavers because I was worried they’d accidentally whack me upside the head. Ouch!

Wow. Wow. Just found this blog, and it’s my new fav.
It’s not just the “it’s funny because it’s true…” it’s they way you put it.
:D Lol (actually)
I feel a few suggestions brewing…

Oh man…when I read this I laughed hard. “the only cure is more puppet.”

That is good!

Black light hand puppetry is for a really, really high fever.

Oh.

This brings up horrible memories of that dummy, Little Marcy.

Even as a child, I was convinced that if Little Marcy had ‘gone forward’ legions of evil spirits would have sprung from her.

Nothing says worship quite like a dowel rod routine to “Arise, My Love.” I’m just saying.

HAHAHa…oh yes. I loved playing handbells. I still love handbells. And sometimes THEY are the only prescription for curing my fever. HANDBELL fever . . . yeah, baby!

Craig Apr 8, 2008

@cellenwade2 – Members of the puppet team at our church did that on Easter Sunday

Handbells were featured this week.

We haven’t used the banners/flags for several years, though.

cheaper version of the flag people: ribbon wavers.

ribbons, on end of dowels. seen them?

i think there is actually an Olympic event for ribbon dancers… but until we do the high dive into the baptismal, i think ribbon dancers should also be on hold in worship.

I am not exactly sure what handbells are, but my church does have the flaggers, so its nice to know the Holy Spirit is cleared for landing. :) I did puppets at my VBS for the longest time, and my AIM is morecowbell, so needless to say I love this post! :)

Ok, I have to stop reading now because I am laughing so hard that I am crying, my eyes are burning and my stomach hurts.

*deep sigh after really long bout of laughter*

bravo, my dear, bravo!

Ok I'm at work and just took a bite out of my sandwich and almost choked with laughter….crap…"because it makes it easier for the Holy Spirit to find you"

Michael Dec 12, 2009

……………………………flags. For the Holy Spirit to find you? ……….. wow.

Just wow.

hhahahahah "I GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL!"

Any reference to that skit is win.

The puppet obsession is so true! We probably use puppets almost as often as we take Communion.

Love me some puppets. And Handbells. Put 'em together…puppets playing handbells! Epic.
