#27. Famous Christians
Jan 27th by Jon
Although the jury is still out on Stephen Baldwin, one of our favorite things is Famous Christians. I have to admit, Scientology has kind of been kicking our butt for a few years. I mean they got Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Giovanni Ribisi. They even got Beck, dear sweet sounding Beck. But we’re not that concerned, want to know why? Because we have Bono. He’s worth like 18 other normal celebrities. Seriously, he is most of the most active, productive people on the planet. I almost wouldn’t be surprised if at some point he admitted that he had been cloned in the late 90s. How else can you explain his work in Africa, his concert tours and his ability to regularly put out good albums? Thank God for Bono.
Why create “Stuff Christians Like?”
Comments
We also have Kirk Cameron.
and Van Morrison & Bob Dylan
You have forgot the one, the only, Chuck Norris. I think Chuck Norris should have his own number because Chuck Norris doesn’t breathe….he holds air hostage.
bono isnt christian, hes irish, religion is a political statement when you are irish
if he is legitimatly saved awesome
the biggest problem i have with bono is that every song i play lead guitar on for worship has to have billions of seconds of ‘edge like delay’, its so boring and lame, i want joe satriani to get saved so worship music can be ultimate
You are too right about this. I LOVE Christian celebs and totally sweat whenever one gets on a reality show (STEVIE BALDWIN!!! AHH!)
“AMEN”…
Just found your site through a friend, and am LAUGHING my booty off reading through it. I could comment on so many of these! But I’ll try and show some self-restraint…
Hrm. Irish people can’t be “legitimately saved;” they can only make “political statements.” And, I suppose the same goes for hispanics, Jews, black people, Southerners and every other group that has a Christian socio-political heritage?
Don’t forget about the celebs that flip-flop back and forth. Bob Dylan had some great stuff (Saved, You gotta serve somebody, Long Train coming) but he didn’t “stick.”
I’ve putting my vote in for Bono to lead worship when we all cross over.
Bono? Debatable.
Except that Bono swears like a pagan, and believes that Christianity, Judaism and Islam are all true–all ways to get to God.
Not quite. You should read "In Conversation with Bono" by Michka Asayas. Bono lays out the clearest gospel message possible.
good thing God is a God of grace, if you dont sin then you can judge Bono….and he doesnt believe what u said. He just thinks that the fighting is absurd and we must get along….why is that bad? Maybe wit hpeace people will see the true God, Bono himself worships. Why dont you listen to U2's music..its like worship half the time
“i want joe satriani to get saved so worship music can be ultimate”
Hey, I thought he WAS Christian!
And, let’s not forget Alice Cooper.
“He’s worth like 18 other normal celebrities.”
Haha. In case you missed it… hell, even if you didn’t, it’s worth seeing again.
I’m Irish (in the country not one of those fake American Irish) and I’m very glad to learn from Ryan that my faith is really just a political statement. Guess I’ll better do canvassing instead of evangelism and make sure I cover all the main propaganda points in my small group lesson.
Faith is Ireland IS NOT a political statement, not in any way or shape or form, so that comment is one of the most confusing I’ve seen. Infact, Ireland is becoming more and more unChristian in its thinking as it gets more affluent and closer to contitental thinking.
I fairly sure Bono has a sincere and secure faith in Jesus. See this: http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/interviews/2005/bono-0805.html
I just read the interview with Bono that Stan referred to. Not sure if the link showed up for everyone else, but on my screen it was half cut off. Anyway, I thought it was interesting, so here’s the link again in case you’re interested in reading it…

Commenting on what ryan, you should read “conversations with bono” or something to that extent. He really is a follower of Jesus. It’s a really interesting book.
VH1 has offered a few. Let’s not forget Gary Busey and Willie “Bible Man” Aames. During Willie’s first stint on Celebrity Fit Club he got really angry at the camera guy or something and actually said “I am so in the flesh right now!” My husband and I almost died!
also much rappers are christian, like Kanye west, Jay-Z,MC Hammer, Tupac,…
in their song they say a lot of stuff about the bible
ooooh people sorry to break it to you but jay-z isn't christian. otherwise he wouldn't say things like "even Jesus can't save you". he is at the top of a very very large and emerging ring of masons in the music industry. youtube it up. take it with a grain of salt, of course, and ask for revelation in your spirit, but don't be misled. kanye has slipped… badly.

I really don't like Bono. Mostly because most of my Christian friends love him so much. Stop worshiping Bono and I'll stop worshiping Debbie Harry.
It's especially fun to see people in the past claimed for 'Christians'—John Adams and Isaac Newton, convicted anti-trinitarians, come to mind—who would be soundly rejected as such by the current crew.
Don't forget Charlie Daniels!! He does not sing "Devil Went Down to Georgia" in concert anymore..
Patricia Heaton!!!
Don't forget Beth Moore and Joyce Meyer. I always hear female Christians saying "I LOVE her!" "She's SO anointed!!" "I wish I could teach like her!" "She's so good she's really the only speaker I prefer to listen to." "I'm in a bad place, I need to take a Beth Moore study." … They are both awesome, but gosh, how abo
Bono is definitely blessed.
Colonel Sanders was a Christian! Started a franchise at 68 years old!
Terry Fator, the puppet guy who won "America's Got Talent," is also a Christian. He signed a 20 year $200 MILLION dollar contract with The Mirage.
How else could a 68 year old guy and a singer with puppets make hundreds of millions of dollars. It's all because of Jesus!
Kinda scary how so many folks reading (and writing) this blog think the modern formulaic version of American evangelical Christianity is the only one. Even just a couple books on the history and diversity of Christianity would humble them. The idea that one has to pray a certain prayer, "get saved" at a specific moment, believe x y and z about the person called Jesus, believe the bible is literal and inerrant, etc are all very culturally bound and time bound ideas. Christianity, on the other hand, is a huge ongoing conversation, much bigger than us and our modern Western notions of "faith=believe=thoughts" and other very very limited "Christian" ideas espoused around here. I hope all will take some time to actually read outside what so-called-Christian bookstores carry adn learn about the beautiful variety of theology found in this amazingly diverse Christian tradition.
Woo Bono!
Sometimes I wish the "famous Christians" would keep their mouth shut about it if they are going to cuss like sailors, get arrested, or strut around in barely any clothes. We're supposed to be different, right?
He is awesome in concert! I actually wrote about it and put a really, really poor video of him singing Amazing Grace on my blog http://www.faithimagined.com/2009/10/breakfast-wi... It was a once in a lifetime experience!
Way to go Bono! I loved the comment in the blog about him being worth "like 18 normal celebrities." Keep up the good work Jon, I really love reading your blog!
