#18. Cross Stitch Bible Verses
Jan 19th by Jon
I’m not sure if someone famous in the Bible was a big fan of cross stitch. I mean maybe Moses or someone like that was always taking little breaks to get out his thread and needle and stitch up a desert scene. Someone must have done it in the Bible though based on how much we like cross stitching Bible verses. If your parents were Christians in the 70s chances are you had some verse stitched and hung in a prominent place in your home. I think there was a law that said they had to. Don’t quote me on that though.
P.S. When I was a senior in college my roommate used to cross stitch his girlfriend pictures. She would in turn cross stitch him belts that had things like the flags of the world on them or tennis rackets. I am not making this up.
Why create “Stuff Christians Like?”

Ha. My pastor always says “That’s not exactly a verse you’d want to cross-stitch and hang in your living room” whenever he’s speaking on a verse that’s dark or just generally hard to swallow. Like pretty much anything Qoheleth said in Ecclesiastes which we did a sermon series on this year.
Star Wars quotes are a much better use of cross-stitchery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nzcupcakequeen/2303880198/in/photostream/
my mom cheats- she prints the verses off the computer and puts themin “fancy” frames! LOL!
In general,it’s a good thing to have scripture in your house, daily before your eyes. (See Duet.6:6-9) I knew a lady who had a small decorative chalkboard on her kitchen counter on which she would write a verse for the family. I thought she was pretty holy for doing that. n do I have one? No. But I do have a lovely framed verse in my powder room.
thoroughly enjoying the site. Can’t even remember how I found it but it’s great fun. Going back and catching up now. But seriously, when and where did you go to college with all that cross-stitch going on?
what i want to know is, where did you go to college?
I agree with the anonymous comment about how we SHOULD have Bible verses in front of our eyes daily, in one form or another. The chalk board idea is a great thing. At my college, most people hung dry erase boards on the outside of their door and lots of people would have a “verse of the day” or “verse of the week” that they would post on it.
I must say, that’s rather awesome cross-stitching.
As for the thing stitched: I told my fiancé once that I’d do one of those for him, so I can’t speak against the practice.
I like to cross-stitch. Is that so wrong?
The question is (And you may have covered this in a later post, I'm still catching up), but which is more popular: The cross-stitched verse on the wall, or the cross-stitched 'Footprints in the Sand'? I think 'Footprints' wins out, honestly…
We definitely had Bible verses cross-stitched in my home growing up. My mom did them when she first got married. And I laughed really hard when I read that about your roomie. He must have been quite the character!
That or she was quite the girl, I remember when I was single, I might have done some pretty crazy things for the right girl…
We had at least two or three in our home growing up. My mom loved them. I think she still has one or two up, actually. I like them because they remind me of her, but it is amusing how many Christian friends homes I go to that have them.
This one's not hard to understand, if you're a craftsperson. Someone who loves to cross-stitch, who finds it relaxing, and who also wants to meditate on Scripture or memorize a certain verse, has the perfect combination of talent and desire. And the end result is something beautiful and functional (in that it helps you to keep Scripture in your mind on a day-to-day basis.) I, personally, have a beautiful pattern for the names of God, which I'm planning to coordinate with a study on each name as I do it. You know, someday, when my children (currently 5, 3, and 2) have all left home.
i work in radio and we had a ministry advertise with us that cross stitched verses on pillows. they actually believed you could learn bible verses through osmosis.
OMG my mom, my aunts, both of my grandmothers, and all the church ladies used to cross stitch. It got out of control. We had cross stitched pillows, pictures, Christmas ornaments, bookmarks, clothes, toilet seat covers, you name it…
I started learning when I wasin 5th grade, but thankfully that trend died before I got very good at it. I think my grandmother might still cross stitch blankets for the new babies in her church.
