Putting a God Spin on Popular Secular Ideas

Oh the irony. One of our favorite things is taking popular secular ideas and putting a coat of God flavor on them. Case in point, that Adidas logo that has been creatively titled with “Add Jesus.” And yet, here I’ve done the same exact thing. I took the wildly popular site “stuff white people like” and tweaked it just a little to make it about people that worship God. But “creatively borrowing” ideas from the world is only one of the things we Christians like to do.
And that’s what this site is going to be, a tongue in cheek exploration of all the silly things Christians like. From Carmen to books about the rapture to crowns of thorns you can buy for $49.99 at the local Christian bookstore. It will be sarcastic, mildly funny and if some of these things hit too close to home, perhaps a little offensive. But I’d rather be honest about my faith and it’s quirks than pretend I’m cool. So email me at theacuffs@yahoo.com if you want to contribute your own “stuff that Christians like.”

I dig it. I do think it’s silly that we take things that are the world’s and put our own name on them. A) It’s unoriginal; B) That’s called conforming, rather than being different; C) It’s just plain lame.
I see so many with the Ichthus fish on the back of the cars. Then you see the Darwin fish with legs on the back of the evolutionists. After that we see those who put the Ichthus fish eating the Darwin fish. Nice!
This is really really funny. This reminded me of a T-shirt I have that says “They will know that we are Christians by our T-Shirts”. Maybe I’ll send you a shot of it sometime.
I would love to see the shirt that floordevo is talking about! Awesome!
You mean like starting a blog called “Stuff Christians Like” that is a rip-off of a popular secular blog called “Stuff White People Like”?
Just kidding! I love the site!
touché
There’s a whole Derek Webb song about knowing us by our t-shirts, and all the other things the world recognizes us for BESIDES love. Really convicting.
Loving this blog.
So, I know it’s waaaay too late to be leaving a comment about this, but did the CCM entertainer spells his name “CarmAn” (a – no “e” like the Opera). Sorry…I was slightly obsessed with him in middle school. *hangs head in shame*
new years resolution in October …to read and catch up with Things Christians Like…and Yes I cant stand the copy shirts like christ instead of crest, meant to die as a Mountain Dew logo…once saw Larry Norman rebuke t shirt sellers and christians at Creation festival for selling/buying these shirts…

I think this entire website is a great concept! You've done a very great job with it! I just found it today and am enjoying all the great articles. God Bless!
Probably a variation on Telling The Truth in Love – the current model is 'having a fierce conversation'. If someone wants to have a fierce conversation run – you are about to be told the truth in love.

my favorite is "worship hero" and the spinoff of guitar hero. Do you think there will ever be a time when Christians will be setting the trends instead of following them again?
*blech* Carman, talk about feel good middle school pep rally crap. Uggh makes me vomit. Or turn Athiest.
What's a christian?
#1 I would say is giving credit to god for other people's achievements
don't miss the principle that doing something derivative ironically raises the "relevance" by an order of magnitude. It's difficult to believe that the Adidas derived graphics is not ironic, as in "Add Jesus, and a cup of cold water, mix well". But it probably wasn't. this illustrates the next highest level of ironicalness (-ism?): Using something derivative AS IF it was originally intended to be ironic, while subtly making it clear that you know it wasn't. The problem with that is that only your "metro-sexual worship leader" will get it.
BTW, how will I know when being ironic is no longer cool? Well, I was just being ironic ironically, anyway.
Wow that made no sense at all. It's barely intelligible.
